The Freshman Application Process At-A-Glance

The Regular Decision application deadline for the Class of 2016 (our fall 2012 freshman class) was January 15, 2012. Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (800) 638-0700 or (314) 935-6000 if you would like to speak with an admissions officer.

Use this checklist to keep track of dates and deadlines as you apply to Washington University.

  1. Olin LibrarySubmit the Pre-Application Data Sheet/Supplement.
This brief Supplement can be submitted on paper or online. While you can submit this form at any time before the deadlines, we encourage you to submit it as soon as possible. Once we have received the Supplement, we will send you a paper copy of the Common Application and we will open your application file so that we are prepared to receive your other application materials.
  2. Submit the Common Application or Universal College Application.
The Common Application may be submitted on paper or online at www.commonapp.org. You may also download the Common Application from this website later this summer. If you prefer, you may submit the Universal College Application in place of the Common Application. You should submit either the Common Application or the Universal College Application, but not both. The Universal College Application is available online at www.universalcollegeapp.com. Both the Common Application and the Universal College Application include the essay questions.
  3. Submit the $55 Application Fee.
The $55 nonrefundable application fee or fee waiver request from your high school guidance counselor is required and should be submitted only once. Make your check payable to Washington University and note the applicant’s name on the check. Do not send cash. If you prefer to pay the application fee using a credit card, you may do so when you submit the Supplement online or when you log in to the WUSTL Pathway on our website. (Note: It is not possible to pay our application fee on the Common Application website.)
  4. Login to the WUSTL Pathway to Check Your Progress.
We will send you instructions for logging in to the WUSTL Pathway, at the email address you provided, when we have processed your application. When you login to the WUSTL Pathway, you will be able to see what pieces of your application we have on file, verify your application data, pay your application fee using a credit card, submit electronic applications for our University Scholars Program and Academic Scholarship & Fellowship Programs, and link to a site where you can check the status of your application for financial assistance. The WUSTL Pathway is the only source of accurate information regarding the status of your application to Washington University; we expect applicants to check it regularly.
  5. Submit Your Support Materials.
In addition to the application forms and essay, you must submit the following supporting materials by the deadlines: School Report and Official Transcript, Teacher Evaluation, SAT or ACT Scores, TOEFL or IELTS (for students whose first language is not English), and portfolio (required for students applying to the College of Art, optional for students applying to the College of Architecture).
  6. Midyear Report
The Midyear Report is an important component of our evaluation process. Your counselor should mail us this form and an updated transcript as soon as possible after January 1, 2012. If you are applying Early Decision, you must submit your first marking period grades in order to complete your application.
  7. Apply for Financial Assistance.
If you wish to be considered for financial assistance based on need, you must submit separate applications. See Financial Assistance for more information.
  8. Apply for Academic Scholarships.
If you wish to be considered for merit-based scholarships, you must submit separate applications. See Academic Scholarship and Fellowship Programs for deadlines, applications, and more information.
  9. Final Report
Applicants who are admitted and who choose to enroll at Washington University will be required to submit the Common Application 2011-2012 Final Report, which includes the official final transcript. Enrolling first-year students will receive this form by mail. The form is also available at www.commonapp.org.
