Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

Above—Members of the Visions Gospel Choir perform before a capacity crowd during the Washington University’s annual celebration honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

The theme of this year’s event was “Living the Legacy: Forging Our Path Through Leadership and Service.” Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton began the program with opening remarks. Bob Hansman, associate professor of architecture, presented the faculty speech, “A Decision to Care,” while seniors Tiffany Johnson and Senior Class President Fernando Cutz presented the student testimonials, “Authentic Transcendence” and “The Legacy of Love,” respectively.

The program included musical and spoken word performances from WUSTL student groups Black Anthology, Visions Gospel Choir and WU-Slam as well as from the University High School Jazz Band. Professor Hansman, his son, and their organization City Faces, were presented with the annual Rosa L. Parks Award for Meritorius Service to the Community.

City Faces is a nationally recognized art and mentoring program begun by Professor Hansman 16 years ago.
