“This scholarship reassured me that I can make successful art. And the best part of studying art at Washington University is that I can focus on art while continuing to cultivate my interests in other areas. As long as you manage time wisely, almost any combination of studies and activities is possible.”

Washington University College of Art awards the Fred Conway Scholarship or the Esther & Arthur Proetz Scholarship, in alternating years, to an entering freshman who plans to pursue the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The Conway or Proetz Scholarship consists of full tuition; up to five partial-tuition awards are available for remaining finalists. The award is made for each year of undergraduate study, as long as the student is making satisfactory progress toward the degree.
The Conway or Proetz Scholarship in Art
The Fred Conway or the Esther & Arthur Proetz Scholarship recognizes superior artistic and academic performance.
Eligibility
All freshman applicants to the College of Art are eligible for these scholarships. No separate scholarship application is required; each College of Art applicant who submits a slide or digital portfolio will be considered for that year’s scholarship. The Scholarship Committee will give preference to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding artistic and scholastic potential for a professional career in the visual arts and who have a strong high school record with SAT or ACT scores consistent with that performance.
The Portfolio
To be considered for the Conway or Proetz Scholarship in Art, you must submit a slide or digital portfolio of 12-15 pieces of recent work, which may include drawings, two- and three-dimensional pieces, or photographs.
- Slide Portfolio
Submit good quality 35mm slides in a plastic slide sleeve. Each slide must be labeled with your name and address. The portfolio will be returned by May 1 only if you provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
- Digital Portfolio
Submit images in a simple, non timed PowerPoint presentation. Also include all of the work in the presentation, in a separate folder, as jpegs saved at 72 dpi resolution and at a size of 600 pixels in the longest direction. Write your name and address on the CD/DVD–do not use a stick-on label. Remember to include an accompanying inventory/contact sheet showing thumbnails of all work on the CD/DVD. The inventory sheet must include your full name and address. If preferred, you may include additional information such as title of work, medium, dimensions, and date completed.
On-Campus Interviews for Finalists
After reviewing applications and portfolios, the Scholarship Committee will select finalists. These students will be notified in early March and invited to visit campus March 22-25, 2012, for personal interviews with the faculty review committee. To remain eligible for the scholarship, finalists will be required to bring original work for review by the Scholarship Committee during the interview weekend. Washington University will pay for finalists' round-trip expenses within the United States and their expenses while in St. Louis during these four days.
On the basis of the personal interview and portfolio reviews, the committee will designate the Conway or Proetz Scholar (whichever is to be awarded that year) in April.
