Washington University College of Art awards the Fred Conway Scholarship or the Esther & Arthur Proetz Scholarship, in alternating years, to an entering freshman who plans to pursue the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The Conway or Proetz Scholarship consists of full tuition; up to five partial-tuition awards are available for remaining finalists. The award is made for each year of undergraduate study, as long as the student is making satisfactory progress toward the degree.

The Conway or Proetz Scholarship in Art

The Fred Conway or the Esther & Arthur Proetz Scholarship recognizes superior artistic and academic performance.

Eligibility

All freshman applicants to the College of Art are eligible for these scholarships. No separate scholarship application is required; each College of Art applicant who submits a slide or digital portfolio will be considered for that year’s scholarship. The Scholarship Committee will give preference to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding artistic and scholastic potential for a professional career in the visual arts and who have a strong high school record with SAT I or ACT scores consistent with that performance.

The Portfolio

To be considered for the Conway or Proetz Scholarship in Art, you must submit a slide or digital portfolio of 12-15 pieces. Details on what to include in the portfolio are in the application requirements section on the instructions page.

If you submit slides, they will be returned after May 1 only if a self-addressed, stamped mailer is included.

On-Campus Interviews for Finalists

After reviewing applications and portfolios, the Scholarship Committee will select finalists. These students will be notified in early March and invited to visit campus March 26-29, 2009, for personal interviews with the faculty review committee. To remain eligible for the scholarship, finalists will be required to bring original work for review by the Scholarship Committee during the interview weekend. Washington University will pay all expenses for the interview weekend.

On the basis of the personal interview and portfolio reviews, the committee will designate the Conway or Proetz Scholar (whichever is to be awarded that year) in April.
