Eligibility
Eads Hall
The focal point for education at the School of Medicine is the Farrell Learning and Teaching Center.

To participate in the University Scholars Program in Medicine, you must submit an application for admission to the Class of 2014 to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Then you must be admitted to Washington University and enter the University as a full-time student in the fall.

In addition, you need to complete the Application for the University Scholars Program in Medicine. Both applications are due to the Admissions Office no later than January 15, 2010. All application materials and forms will be available on this Web site.

We are looking for students of strong character with outstanding academic records who demonstrate personal achievement, citizenship, and leadership in academic and extracurricular activities in high school and who will continue these in their undergraduate years.

Washington University’s medical program is selective, so students who become finalists for the University Scholars Program are highly accomplished in their academic and extracurricular undertakings.

The University Scholars Committee will select a group of finalists invited to visit campus during the spring of their senior year of high school—at the University’s expense—to participate in special activities and interviews. Those who are named University Scholars will be notified shortly thereafter. Those not chosen may still be admitted to one of Washington University’s outstanding undergraduate divisions. And, if you enroll at Washington University as undergraduates, you may still apply later to medical school or one of our other graduate programs. In fact, we encourage them to do so.

To continue to medical school, you will need to fulfill all entrance requirements. Your pre-professional advisor will work with you as an undergraduate to make sure that you fulfill the prerequisites for medical school. You will need to maintain an overall minimum 3.8 grade point average (GPA) to guarantee your position in medical school; if your GPA is below this minimum, your eligibility for graduate study will be up to the School of Medicine’s discretion. You will also need to achieve a total score of at least 36 on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

What if Plans or Interests Change?

We realize your circumstances or academic interests may change as you pursue your undergraduate studies. If this happens, you will not be required to enter medical school.

In addition, you may defer enrollment into your undergraduate studies and/or your graduate studies by up to two years each.
