Dual Undergraduate and Graduate Admission

One of the great benefits of undergraduate study at a university like Washington University is the presence of our graduate programs, which help attract outstanding students and world-class faculty members to the University.

The University Scholars Program at Washington University gives selected students the opportunity to be admitted to undergraduate study and to a graduate program at the same time. This gives a select group of highly motivated students an early orientation to a career path that interests them.

Programs for the Class of 2013 include:

These highly regarded Washington University programs are among the best of their kind in the nation. Students chosen as University Scholars will have outstanding academic records and will have shown leadership in academic and extracurricular activities during high school.

Highlights of the University Scholars Program

  • You apply for admission to both undergraduate and graduate degree programs before entering college. (If your plans change, you are not required to attend the graduate program.)
  • Finalists will be invited to campus in the spring of their senior year of high school for interviews with representatives from our undergraduate divisions and the chosen graduate program.
  • If selected as a University Scholar, you gain admission to undergraduate and graduate study at the same time, as long as you successfully complete your undergraduate studies.
  • You will have a mentor from your graduate program.
  • You will be invited to attend special lectures and other events in the graduate program to which you are admitted.
  • If you are interested, you will be able to engage in research as an undergraduate.
  • As a University Scholar, you will receive pre-professional advising.
  • You may have an opportunity to “shadow” a graduate student in a practicum or clinical component of your graduate or professional program.
  • You can change your mind. And if you do, you still have lots of great choices for an outstanding education.

What if My Plans or Interests Change?

If you change your mind about your proposed course of graduate study because of changes in your circumstances or your academic interests, you are not obligated to pursue the graduate program to which you have been admitted.

In addition, you may defer enrollment into your undergraduate studies and/or your graduate studies by up to two years each.
