Summer Internship

Overview  

The Summer Internship Program in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions provides a paid professional experience for Washington University students to assist with daily campus Admissions programming. Interns will gain exposure to the various functions of admissions at a highly selective institution. The internship provides a mixture of responsibilities including serving prospective students and families and some project work. The internship will operate fully in-person as University policy and CDC safety guidelines allow. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Giving in-person student-led campus tours 
  • Conducting virtual tours of campus and managing the Q&A function of the Zoom 
  • Staffing the Lobby of Sumers Welcome Center and facilitating the check-in process for daily visiting guests 
  • Facilitating virtual and in-person prospective student interviews and interview breakout rooms  
  • Engaging with prospective students electronically via email, Zoom, and the Welcome to College platform 
  • Providing support for panels, information sessions, webinars, etc. 
  • Assisting with planning and executing special in-person events, such as special visit days, group visits, luncheons, etc. 
  • Co-presenting the admissions information session with a professional staff member to groups of 300+ daily visitors 
  • Managing the mock residential hall space 
  • Other tasks as assigned 
  • All interns will work on projects within admissions & aid within the functional areas of:  
    • Visit Experience (VX) and Events 
    • Inclusion and Access 
    • Marketing & Communications (MarComms) 
    • Systems, Services, and Student Financial Services (SFS) 
    • Recruitment 

Required Skills/Characteristics: 

  • Summer Interns must be full-time undergraduate students in the Classes of 2025, 2026, or 2027 and be able to make the necessary time commitment. 
    • Transfer students require at least one year at WashU to be eligible to apply 
  • Good academic and judicial standing with the university (your application gives us permission to check your standing) 
  • Enthusiasm about the university and what it offers students 

Hours: 

  • The internship is a full-time position at 37.5 hours/week 
  • Start Date: Tuesday, May 14, 2024, End Date: Friday, August 16, 2024 
  • The Undergraduate Admissions Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional programs on early mornings, evenings, and on Saturdays and Sundays. Interns should expect to work the majority of their shifts between Monday – Friday with the occasional Saturday or Sunday as needed. Non-paid vacation time is available. 
  • All interns are required to attend a mandatory training that will occur May 14 – 19, 2024 and are expected to staff all of our special visit days. Our special visit days will occur on Mondays and Fridays throughout the month of July. 
  • This is a temporary position, but with the option to turn this into an academic year Bear Ambassador position based on performance and staffing needs. 

Desired Skills/Characteristics: 

  • Comfort in giving up to 90-minute campus tours in the summer heat and humidity 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills 
  • Comfortable with public speaking in both small and large groups 
  • Commitment to providing the highest level of customer service to every prospective student/family 
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and is willing to jump-in and assist however is needed 
  • Interest in exploring higher education as a potential career field 
  • LGBTQIA+ and People of Color are encouraged to apply.

Compensation 

  • Interns will be compensated at a rate of $13.34 per hour 
  • Additional perks such as on-campus housing or parking are negotiable upon an offer of employment

Summer Bear Ambassador Program

Overview  

The Summer Bear Ambassador Program in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions provides a paid experience for Washington University students to assist with daily campus visitor programming during the summer. The Bear Ambassador position provides a mixture of key responsibilities working with prospective students and families, and allows exposure to the various functions of admissions at a highly selective institution. The position will operate fully in-person as University policy and CDC safety guidelines allow.

  • The ambassadorship is a part-time position with a flexible amount of hours per week. Hours worked will depend on availability and staffing needs. The average amount of hours worked by Summer Bear Ambassadors is between 4-10 hours per week. 
  • Start Date: Tuesday, May 14, 2024 End Date: Friday, August 16, 2024 
  • The Undergraduate Admissions Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am-5pm. With occasional programs on early mornings, evenings, and on Saturdays and Sundays. Summer Bear Ambassadors should expect to work the majority of their shifts between Monday – Friday with the occasional Saturday or Sunday as needed. Non-paid vacation time is available. 
  • All Summer Bear Ambassadors are required to attend mandatory training that will occur May 14 – 17, 2024 and are highly encouraged to align availability for our special visit days. Our special visit days will mainly occur on Mondays and Fridays throughout the month of July. 

This is a temporary position, but with the option to turn this into an academic year Bear Ambassador position based on performance and staffing needs. 

Compensation 

  • Ambassadors will be compensated at a rate of $12.34 per hour

Academic Year Internship

Overview

The Academic Year Internship in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions provides a paid professional experience for Washington University students to share their WashU story and experience with prospective students and their guests. Interns will gain exposure to the various functions of admissions at a highly selective institution. The internship provides a mixture of responsibilities that work with prospective students and families, and will have significant project work with specific leadership roles within the Bear Ambassador team. The internship will operate in a hybrid-model, tasking students with a combination of in-person and virtual responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • All interns will hold one liaison/leadership position within one of the following areas:
    • Recruitment & Selections Team – Leads the recruitment, interview, and selection process for new Bear Ambassadors.
      • Champions diversity and fosters a culture of inclusivity and equity in the recruitment process
      • Maintains a record of interested current students who want to work as Bear Ambassadors
      • Schedules and conducts interviews for new Bear Ambassadors
      • Reviews the hiring logistics for newly hired Bear Ambassadors
    • Training & Examination Team – Organizes, plans, and leads all mandatory trainings required for Bear Ambassadors
      • Organizes the schedule for all trainings and leads interview, campus tour, lobby, and tough question trainings for newly hired Bear Ambassadors
      • Fosters community amongst new Bear Ambassadors throughout the training process
      • Creates in-person evaluative procedures and online modules for new Bear Ambassadors to determine job readiness
      • Updates handbooks regularly for tours, interviews, and other standard operating procedures
    • Management & Operations Team – Oversees the daily schedule for all campus tours, interviews, and lobby shifts
      • Schedules student staff for all daily visit campus tours, interviews, and lobby shifts
      • Utilizes scheduling platform, Welcome to College, to collect and audit availability for all student workers
      • Communicate coverage needed for any uncovered shifts
      • Manages roster of student workers
    • Visit Experience (VX) & Events Team – Focuses on the visit experience for all prospective visitors and guests and coordinates the logistics for all special events held by the Undergraduate Admissions Office.
      • Manages student staffing for large events, e.g. Discover WashU, Junior Jumpstart, Bear Day, and Middle School Day
      • Serves as an on-call student worker for large visit days
      • Brainstorm and implement new ideas to better serve visitors and prospective students
      • Develops helpful guides for WashU and the surrounding area

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Giving in-person student-led campus tours to groups
  • Conducting virtual tours of campus and managing the Q&A function of Zoom sessions
  • Handling the daily check-in process for visiting guests in the Sumers Welcome Center and other visit areas on campus
  • Co-presenting the general admissions information session with a professional staff member to 300+ daily visitors

  • Engaging with prospective students electronically via email, Zoom, phone, etc.
  • Providing support for special in-person and virtual events, such as panels, information sessions, Webinars, etc.
  • Assisting with special in-person events, such as special visit days, group visits, luncheons, and overnight programs
  • Managing the mock residential hall space
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned

Required Skills/Characteristics

  • WashU current student from the Class of 2025, 2026, or 2027
  • Good academic and judicial standing with the university (your application gives us permission to check your standing). Minimum 2.5 GPA required.
  • Transfer students require at least one year at WashU to be eligible to apply
  • Must have previously held a Bear Ambassador, Summer Bear Ambassador, Summer Intern, or Academic Year Intern position

Desired Skills/Characteristics

  • Hiring preference will be given to students who can fulfill the role in a hybrid capacity
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking in both small and large groups
  • Commitment to providing the highest level of customer service to every prospective student/family

Hours

The internship is a part-time position (10-14 hours/week) with some weekends required. The Undergraduate Admissions Office is open Monday-Saturday with occasional programs on Sunday. Interns should expect to work the majority of their shifts between Monday – Friday with the occasional Saturday or Sunday as needed. Non-paid vacation time is available. In addition, all interns are required to attend a mandatory training that will occur in late August of 2024. Meals and on-campus housing will be provided free of cost to all interns for the duration of August training.

Compensation

Interns will be compensated at a rate of $13.34 per hour. This position is Federal Work-Study eligible.
