Financial Aid

Washington University has a long tradition of working individually with the families of our students. We feel strongly that cost should never be a barrier to a great education. Our Student Financial Services office will customize a financial assistance award that ensures cost does not stand in the way of making a Washington University education a reality. We are committed to meeting 100 percent of the need for admitted students.

Application Instructions and Deadlines
Need-Based Financial Assistance

The components included within a financial assistance award based on financial need are specific to each family’s financial circumstances and work together to make enrollment a reality. Students are generally eligible to receive financial assistance for eight semesters. For students admitted to combined-degree programs requiring more than four years of study, aid will be extended beyond eight semesters.

Students who receive financial assistance come from a wide variety of family income levels since many factors (such as household size, the number of children in the household attending college, the parents’ age, etc.) affect eligibility. All applicants are encouraged to apply for financial assistance.

Washington University has eliminated need-based loans as part of its undergraduate financial aid awards to students from low- and middle-income families. Entering first-year students and returning full-time undergraduate day-school students with parental incomes of less than $75,000 annually are not awarded need-based loans and instead receive grants from the university that will not have to be repaid.

Families with parental income somewhat higher than $75,000 also may receive additional student loan relief based on demonstrated need and their financial circumstances.

information for parents

Washington University is a leader in creating innovative, flexible payment plans. Programs range from monthly tuition installments to low-interest loans, and are designed to help parents manage the cost of their child’s college education.

Washington University’s PEP Program is among the best parent financing programs in the country. PEP — Partners in Education with Parents — features low interest rates, low monthly repayment terms, and the chance to freeze up to four years of charges at the entering-year rate.

Our interest-free Installment Payment Plan allows families to spread each year's tuition, fees, room, and board charges over 10 equal monthly payments. The plan can be renewed for 12-month periods. An annual administration fee is required.

First-year Student Academic Scholarship & Fellowship Programs

Washington University is committed to helping talented students who show exceptional academic performance and outstanding promise. The Academic Scholarship and Fellowship Programs offer financial assistance based primarily on academic achievement. These awards are bestowed through special competitions, and applications are separate from the application for admission.

All five undergraduate divisions—the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Architecture, College of Art, Olin Business School, and School of Engineering & Applied Science—sponsor scholarships and fellowships for exceptional students. These awards range from annual awards of $3,000 to half-tuition scholarships to full-tuition scholarships ($50,650 in academic year 2017-18) with annual stipends. Each involves expectations that the students selected will participate actively in shaping the academic and campus communities of which they become a part.

Students can apply for the academic scholarships and fellowships that match their academic and extracurricular achievements. These interests should be indicated on their Common Application or Coalition Application for the Class of 2022. Students may also apply for need-based financial assistance.
