Either TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or Duolingo English Test is required of all international students for whom English is a second language and recommended for U.S. citizens or permanent residents whose second language is English.
The Duolingo English Test can be taken online at any time. The exam requires the Google Chrome browser and your computer’s self-facing camera and microphone. The testing session is recorded and verified by a Duolingo proctor, and the results are available within 48 hours.
The tests administered in December 2019 will be the last ones accepted for fall 2020 admission (October if applying Early Decision I).
Students who have achieved one of the following exam results will be exempted from the English-testing requirement, once scores are received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions:
- A score of 670 or higher on the Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (ERW) section of the SAT.
- An ACT English score of at least 30.
Requests for waivers based on other exceptional circumstances will be considered.
Any of the following students who wish to strengthen their academic credentials are welcome to submit the TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo results:
- Those who receive a waiver of the English-testing requirement.
- Those who speak any language other than English at home.
