Interviews are not required as part of the admission application process

If you are visiting campus, we do encourage you to schedule an interview while you’re here.

To request an interview, schedule your campus visit online.

Interviews are for high school students who plan to apply as first-year students for the Fall of 2021.

If you receive an invitation for an alumni interview, we encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity. Don’t be concerned if you’re unable to have an on-campus or alumni interview—it won’t negatively affect your chances for admission. Conversely, pursuing more than one interview opportunity is discouraged. Again, an interview isn’t required, and, if you complete one, that’s more than enough.

On-campus interviews last around 15-20 minutes, while alumni interviews last approximately 20-30 minutes. You’ll be able to share information about yourself and ask questions about your interviewer’s experience at WashU. Dress as you are most comfortable. Most interviewers dress in business-casual attire.

Any submission material (résumés, transcripts, etc.) should be submitted online with your application so there’s no need to bring them with you.

On-Campus interviews

To schedule an optional on-campus interview, please submit our online form or call our visit experience coordinators: (800) 638-0700 (toll-free) or (314) 935-6000, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Central Time.

Alumni interviews

In addition to on-campus interviews, we offer a limited number of alumni interviews to first-year Early Decision I and II, and Regular Decision applicants through our Alumni and Parents Admission Program (APAP). Unfortunately, APAP is unable to take direct requests for alumni interviews. Alumni interviews are not available for transfer applicants.

Individual interviews

Once you submit an application for admission, APAP will pass your contact information on to alumni volunteers in your area, where available. Our APAP volunteers are excited to share their WashU experiences with you. The volunteer will contact you by email or phone to set up an interview at a convenient time and place (such as a local coffee shop). Interviews are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. While APAP interviews are offered in many parts of the United States and in several countries, availability is limited and we are not able to offer alumni interviews to all applicants. Priority for APAP interviews will be given to applications received by October 25 (Early Decision I) or December 15 (Early Decision II and Regular Decision).

Interview Days

APAP plans a limited number of Interview Days in select areas. If APAP is able to invite you to participate in an Interview Day, your invitation will arrive via email. Please be sure to check the email account you provided on your application for admission regularly. Interview availability is limited.

Video interviews

If you are an international student interested in submitting an interview to WashU, but are unable to have an on-campus or alumni interview, you may consider the following options:

We accept admissions interviews from InitialView.

Duolingo English Test (DET)

For international students who are subject to the English Testing Requirement, the DET both demonstrates English proficiency and serves as an interview.
